AFON 11/RIVER 11 (2024)

Deep in the heart of the village of Abercych in Wales. Body percussionist Jon Rodd plays in response to the local river. The ebb and flow of the water syncs to the pace and dynamics of his body music.

This site-responsive piece was created in collaboration with Maynard Abercych CIC and the local community of Abercych. Directed and choreographed by Omari Carter and filmed by James Williams. Each member of the team participated in deep listening, as they scoured the land for inspiration, allowing their senses to lead the process of creation.

This piece was created as part of the AFON Deep Listening Residencies hosted by Maynard Abercych CIC in the village of Abercych, Wales. Each of the 11 invited artists were asked to create, explore and play with their practice in relation to the local river and to include the local community in some way. The residency culminates in this dual-screen installation; one screen showcasing the raw unedited footage, while the other shows the final edit of the film. Highlighting the importance of experiencing the process as well as a final output. Directional speakers are placed above each screen, allowing audiences to hear the audio of each video display more intimately depending on their position in the space.
